Pears

By:   Krista Winjum

Winter's Perfect Partner

We love winter and the arrival of pear season. With their honeyed fragrance, elegant shape, and delicate flavor, they add a delectable variety to dishes both sweet and savory.

Which Variety?

Like apples, pears come in many varieties. While all pears can be eaten raw, the best for cooking are those that take the heat without losing their texture?varieties like Bosc, Comice, and Anjou.

So Good for You

More than just a palate pleaser, pears are low in calories and loaded with fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. And unless the recipe calls for it, don’t peel those antioxidant-rich skins!

What to Do

Pears work beautifully in salads, paired with cheeses, as a subtle accompaniment to roasted meats, and in fabulous desserts. Try them poached, stuffed, and baked, or in pies and tarts.
